Our story

Mission

To help students gain confidence, improve learning and obtain academic success

Our values

Logos for Values-01.png

Trying is more important than being right

No one is born knowing how to do things. We learn by trying, failing and improving. Sandbox Learning is a safe environment where it doesn’t matter if you are wrong as long as you have a go.

Everyone can learn

There is no such thing as not being an English or Maths person.
With the right approach and support every student can improve.

Play the long game

If you never need that information again go ahead and cram. For everything else it saves time in the long run to learn it properly

Evidence over opinions

Opinions are great but they aren’t good enough to help our students learn. We use data through all our work to track progress, identify knowledge gaps and drive increased learning.

There is no teaching without learning

Teaching in the absence of student learning is just talking. It is the role of educators to help their students learn. If students aren’t learning then we haven’t done our jobs. Period.

A shared responsibility for learning

Tutoring at Sandbox Learning is a team event with everyone having a role to play. Tutors explain difficult concepts and structure environments for learning. Parents need to encourage, support and remind their kids to do their work. Students need to be prepared and actually do the work.

Jesse W

Founder &
Director of Learning

Hi I’m Jesse. My personal mission is to make learning effective and efficient. I have been helping students for over 15 years across school and university level, in Australia and abroad. Everyone can learn given the right environment, the right approaches, and the right amount of effort.

I first started tutoring in year 9 at Cranbrook helping my teacher’s son with maths. Through word of mouth student numbers grew and at one point I was tutoring 20+ hours a week while studying full time. I was a course tutor for multiple Engineering courses at UNSW taught Finance at Harvard Business School.

I started Sandbox Learning to help students build confidence, understanding and through that achieve strong academic results. Many tutoring organisations cater to the top end - getting students from 90 to 99. I wanted a place that helped those left behind. Students for whom we could make a serious impact.

General Manager

Hi there. I am Elizabeth but most people just call me Liz! I am theGeneral Manager at Sandbox Learning Australia. But what does that all mean? Well a few things actually. Firstly, it means making sure we really understand the needs of our students. Ensuring we have a consistent experience for all of our Sandbox Families each week. Hiring the best tutors for our students. Coordinating great educational events for our community. And finally, helping our students with study skills and keeping our Years 12 calm and on the prize.

Drawing on my own schooling experiences I am passionate about working with each one of our students to keep them motivated, organised and always enthusiastic about their learning.

Tutor

Hi! My name is Stephanie! I graduated from Fort Street High School in 2019 and am currently a second year student studying for a Bachelor of Applied Sciences majoring in Diagnostic Radiography at the University of Sydney. In my spare time, I enjoy camping trips, exploring scenic and foodie places and spending time with my friends and family. I approach everyday with a smile and love to have a laugh with those around me!

I have always had a passion for learning and believe learning should be made fun. I love how tutoring allows a personalised approach so that students can learn at their own pace in a comfortable and supportive environment. In tutoring, I hope for students to perceive learning as enjoyable, rather than overwhelming, as they build their knowledge to understand how everything fits into the world around us.

I tutor in Mathematics and Chemistry.

Hamish S
Tutor

Hi! I’m Hamish, and I’m a tutor here at Sandbox. I graduated in 2019 from St. Aloysius College in Milsons Point, and am currently studying Economics and Advanced Science at UNSW. Cricket and football are two of my favourite pastimes, despite the fact that I am absolutely terrible at them.  I always enjoy watching a game or just spending time at a game with friends and family.

When I tutor, I find that the most satisfying part of the whole process is that moment when the concept or question that has been a challenge is finally conquered. At school, I was always passionate about English and Economics but also enjoying learning as much as I could in any subject. This drives my desire to teach others- I want to pass onto others the passion I experience from my own experience of learning.

I tutor in Mathematics, English, Science, Chemistry and Economics.

Hi! My name is Martha! I completed high school at Loreto Normanhurst, graduating in the class of 2015. I am in my first year of a Postgraduate Doctor of Medicine at the University of Notre Dame. In my free time I enjoy catching up with friends and family, reading a good book, hiking and travelling. I am also very passionate about engaging in local social justice initiatives. I am enthusiastic, motivated and always open to having a chat.

I have tutored for five years at primary, high school and university level. Learning is important in all stages of life and never stops! As a tutor I aim to make learning enjoyable and fun by building student confidence. Additionally, I like that tutoring is done with a smaller group of students or individually, enabling me to cater uniquely for every student’s needs.

I tutor in Mathematics, English. Science, Chemistry and Biology.

Hi!  I’m Teddie. I’m a maths and science tutor here at Sandbox. I graduated from Cranbrook in 2017 and I’m currently in my third year studying Advanced science at the University of Sydney, majoring in physiology and immunology. I’m hoping to continue at uni to study medicine in the future. In my spare time I love reading and watching documentaries - the more obscure the subject the better! I also enjoy going for walks, catching up with friends and learning languages. As a person I don’t take myself too seriously and am always happy to have a chat. I love learning and have a passion for sharing the things I have learnt, especially in a tutoring context. I’m also very motivated to see students learn for the sake of learning, not just to prepare them for the next assessment.

I am currently completing a Bachelor of Arts and Advanced Studies at the University of Sydney. I love to read, and I frequently check out my local bookstores. In my spare time, I love to play the piano and the guitar. I am patient, organised, friendly and enjoy helping others!

I have always enjoyed English as a subject and I love helping students understand their texts better. I believe that learning can be fun for students and shouldn’t have to feel daunting. Organisation of English skills and content is how I help my students develop a well-rounded understanding of their studies. I understand each student is different and enjoy catering to them individually.

Summer P Square.jpg

Summer P
Tutor

Hi! My name is Summer. I graduated high school in the US in 2016 and am now a third-year student at the University of Sydney, studying Neuroscience and Anatomy & Histology. I used to be a ballet dancer, and in my spare time, I enjoy spending time with friends and family, reading, and going to the beach or on long walks to explore the city. I love meeting new people and am friendly and approachable.

I believe the most valuable aspect of tutoring is the ability for students to personalise their learning. Everyone learns at a different pace and in a different style. By finding the way of explaining and practising concepts that works best for each student, I aim to help students not only reach their goals, but also build critical thinking skills that they will use throughout their life, no matter where life takes them!

Tia O Square.jpg

Tia O
Tutor

Hi! I’m Tia and I graduated from an International school in Singapore in 2019. I am currently studying a Bachelor of science with a major in medical science at the University of Sydney - loving every minute of it so far! When I'm not tutoring I enjoy playing soccer, swimming in the ocean and spending time with my family and friends. I pride myself on being compassionate, always ready to listen and above all, putting 100% into everything I do.

My passion has always been in the biological sciences. The way in which the things we see around us are controlled by thousands of small microscopic processes has always fascinated me, it wasn’t till my last years of high school that I decided I wanted to contribute to solving world health issues. Throughout school I spent a lot of time perfecting revision techniques and consolidating knowledge into my long term memory, so it brings me great joy being able to get to know my tutees and help them do the same.

I tutor in mathematics.

In addition to being a keen reader, my hobbies include language learning and strength sports.

I feel fortunate to have the opportunity to share the skills and experiences I gained during my time in school. Hi, I’m Stirling, and I graduated from The Scots College in 2019. I have just finished my first year of a double degree in Commerce and Law at the University of NSW.  I am going into my second year where I will undertake a major in finance and a minor in accounting. I’m a firm believer in making the most out of this life, and so I strive to enjoy each day and maintain a healthy work, life and leisure balance.

Since finishing school, my passion for the humanities and learning has continued, leading me to work as a tutor throughout 2020 and now in 2021. I have always enjoyed, through tutoring, the process of transferring knowledge and helping others achieve their academic goals. When teaching, my goal is always to not only to provide a holistic, strategy driven approach to learning during the HSC/highschool journey, but also to make sure my students enjoy their work and become more comfortable with challenging topics.  In this way I assist them to excel and improve.
